570 State Workers to Lose Jobs

October 9, 2008

In Richmond Virginia, population, 7,642,884, Governor Tim Kaine, Democrat Governor Kaine ordered the lay off of 570 state workers, about 5%, of the State workforce, as the budget outlook continues to deteriorate.

Governor Kaine said college funding will be cut; state employee raises are indefinitely delayed, and 800 vacancies will stay unfilled.

What has this got to do with Maine, population 1,274,923? Based on a 2000 census, Virginia’s deficit is nearly $13.00 per person. The projected deficit for this year is $973 million for a State much richer than Maine and a deficit twice as large.

Mainers may face a $500,000,000 deficit and while $500 million seems a lot smaller than 973 million the debt to population is the kicker. Maine’s deficit is nearly $41.00 a person with far fewer resources to bring to bear.
The first target in Virginia and in Maine will be government.

Next year the deficit in Virginia is projected to increase by fifty percent. This trend will be faced by most States across the nation. Ironically, Sarah P. will return to one of the only States in the nation whose budget will be secure.

This is a growing story across the United States and if you are a government employee it is time to start being very worried.
